Website Ownership Explained: How We Set You Up for Independence and Long-Term Success

Websites

One of the most common questions we hear from clients is: “Will I own my website when we’re done?”

It’s a great question—and it can be confusing if you’ve heard different answers from different companies. When people talk about website ownership, they might be referring to the design, the content, the domain, the hosting, or the platform it’s built on.

Here’s how we approach ownership at Saltd Studio, and why we believe it matters.

Ownership Means Long-Term Control

When we say you’ll own your website, we mean you’re in control of the key parts:

  • Domain (like yourbusiness.com): Registered and renewed under your own account
  • Platform & hosting (like Squarespace or Showit): Paid directly by you
  • Admin access: You hold the primary logins—we stay on as collaborators for support
  • Content: Any copy we write for your site is yours to reuse anywhere

This setup gives you full independence. You can manage billing, change platforms, update permissions, or bring in new collaborators—whenever you want. You’re the keyholder.

Pro tip: If you have an employee managing your website, give them a role below admin when possible—just like you wouldn’t add someone to your bank account without serious trust. Your website is part of your business infrastructure, so it’s important to protect access.

Why Not Every Company Works This Way

Every company has its own process. Some keep client sites under one master account for efficiency, or to streamline lower-cost builds. Others bundle hosting into their pricing to simplify things for clients.

That approach can work in certain scenarios, but it can also create challenges if you ever need to change providers or regain access.

We prefer to do it differently.

At Saltd, we set everything up in your name from day one. That way, your investment is protected, your brand is secure, and your access is never at risk.

It does mean you’ll be responsible for keeping your billing details up to date to avoid any downtime or, in the worst case, a deleted website. If you get a new credit card, be sure to update it with your domain provider and website platform so everything keeps running smoothly.

The Big Picture

Website ownership isn’t just about files and logins. It’s about empowering you with lasting control over your digital presence. We’ll help you get everything set up, provide ongoing support, and build something that reflects your brand—but in the end, it belongs to you.
